Towards end of World War II, while studying for his PhD at UDCT Mumbai, a 24 year old Bapulal Thakkar single-handedly started producing Thermoset materials in a small shed in Sewri. The company was called Tipco which is an acronym for The Industrial Plastics COrporation. This began India’s plastics raw material industry. In the early 1980’s, Tipco pioneered the production of engineering thermoplastics compounds under the leadership of our chairman Nirmal Thakkar, which is now Autotech-Sirmax.What started out as a one-man-show in 1945 is now a multi-location, multi-product, One-Stop-Shop™ for all speciality polymers, compounds and Tipwood (Think Beyond Wood)® Composites with international collaborations, starting in the early 1950’s with Philips followed by Ferro, Hoechst, Constab, GE Plastics, Mitsui-Prime Polymer, and now with Sirmax. After eight decades, Tipco’s journey continues to be rewarding for our stakeholders, our community and our partners. Right from the early days of AIPMA INDIA in the 1940’s, to the creation of PLASTINDIA Foundation in mid-1980’s, followed by OPPI (www.oppindia.org) and even beyond, Tipco continues to be an integral part of India’s plastics industry journey. Service to our country, our industry, our community and to stakeholders are all important values of Tipco group.
